Simon Madjie, the CEO of the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority (GIPA), outlined a plan for faster and friendlier services at the official opening of the Ghana Trade House in London. This new initiative aims to promote Ghanaian products in the United Kingdom and strengthen trade and investment relations between Ghana and the UK.
New Legal Framework Enhances Investor-Friendly Services
The transition from the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) to GIPA, following the passage of the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority Act, marked a significant milestone in the country's investment promotion agenda. President John Dramani Mahama assented to the Act in July this year, formally transforming GIPC into GIPA and giving the Authority an expanded mandate to attract, facilitate, promote, and retain investments. The new legislation has strengthened GIPA's mandate, enabling it to better support both local and foreign investors through simplified registration processes, fully digitalized services, and faster turnaround times.
Simplified Registration and Digital Services
The Ghana Investment Promotion Authority (GIPA) is Ghana's primary state agency for encouraging and regulating business investments. As part of its new mandate, GIPA aims to provide a more efficient and investor-friendly environment for businesses. This includes removing blanket minimum capital requirements for most enterprises, allowing for more flexibility in business operations. The new framework also aligns national rules with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), a significant move towards regional economic integration.
Strengthening Trade and Investment Relations
The Ghana Trade House in London is an initiative to promote Ghanaian products in the United Kingdom. This platform aims to strengthen trade and investment relations between Ghana and the UK, providing opportunities for Ghanaian businesses to expand their reach and tap into new markets. The Ghana Investment Promotion Authority will play a key role in supporting this initiative, working closely with the Ghana Trade House to facilitate business connections and investment opportunities.
A New Era for Investment Promotion in Ghana
The passage of the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority Act marks a significant step forward in Ghana's investment promotion agenda. With its expanded mandate and simplified registration processes, GIPA is well-positioned to attract and retain investments in Ghana. As the country continues to navigate the complexities of regional economic integration, the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority will play a crucial role in supporting Ghanaian businesses and promoting economic growth.
