Diego Forlan has agreed to take charge of Uruguay's national team on an interim basis, replacing Marcelo Bielsa who stepped down after the team's early exit from the World Cup.
Forlan will be in charge for the national team's friendlies this autumn before a permanent manager is appointed at the end of this year or the start of 2027.
Forlan's Interim Tenure
Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has agreed to become Uruguay's interim head coach. The 47-year-old is set to lead the national team through its friendlies this autumn, ahead of the appointment of a permanent manager.
Forlan has also been named coach for Uruguay's Under-20 team, alongside the senior first team.
Bielsa's Departure
Ex-Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa became Uruguay's boss in May 2023 but won only 15 of his 39 games in charge. After their disappointing early exit from the World Cup, the 70-year-old Argentine said his tenure "left nothing behind".
Bielsa's departure comes after a short tenure, but Forlan's appointment may bring a much-needed boost to the team.
Forlan's Coaching Experience
Forlan's coaching career so far consists of brief stints with Uruguayan clubs Penarol and Atenas. His playing career, however, was more illustrious, with 36 goals in 112 games for Uruguay and the Golden Ball award for their semi-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
He announced his retirement from international football in March 2015 and ended his playing career in 2018 after appearing for 10 clubs, including Villarreal and Atletico Madrid in Spain.
A Familiar Face
Forlan's return to the national team is a familiar one, given his successful playing career with Uruguay. He will be tasked with revitalizing the team ahead of its next major tournament.
The appointment of Forlan as interim coach may bring a much-needed sense of continuity and stability to the team, as it prepares for the appointment of a permanent manager.
The friendlies this autumn will provide Forlan with an opportunity to assess the team's strengths and weaknesses, ahead of the appointment of a permanent manager at the end of this year or the start of 2027.
