The Tema Youth Association has thrown its weight behind the Tema Metropolitan Assembly's (TMA) ongoing demolition of unauthorized structures along the beachfront in the metropolis. The exercise, which aims to restore order and sanitation, has entered its eleventh day and is expected to be completed within the planned 15-day period.
Tema Youth Association Pledges Support for Beach Demolition Exercise
In a letter addressed to the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Madam Ebi Bright, the Tema Youth Association expressed its support for the assembly's efforts to remove unauthorized structures within designated security zones. The association commended the assembly for its commitment to creating a cleaner, safer, and more organized city.
The Tema Youth Association also expressed the hope that the redevelopment of the beachfront would attract investment and transform the area into a modern economic hub capable of creating employment opportunities beyond traditional fishing-related activities. The association pledged its support for the assembly's environmental sanitation, community development, and youth empowerment programmes.
TMA Explains Motivations Behind Demolition Exercise
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Frank Asante, Public Relations Officer of the TMA, explained that the demolition formed part of the assembly's metropolitan-wide facelift campaign aimed at enforcing designated security zones and restoring order in public spaces. The exercise, he said, was being carried out on the theme: "Organised Spaces, Fair Opportunities."
Mr. Asante emphasized that the assembly's focus was on designated security zones, after which they would move to other locations across the metropolis. He noted that the chiefs had visited the site and commended the exercise, adding that the support from the youth was not surprising.
Stakeholder Meetings to Educate Fish Processors
The TMA is engaging fish processors operating within the area to ensure that redevelopment efforts support, rather than disrupt, their economic activities. Mr. Asante said the assembly would organize a series of stakeholder meetings involving the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to educate fish processors on hygienic fish handling and processing practices.
He noted that fish processors were a key sector of the local economy and contributed significantly to women's economic empowerment. The assembly wants them to operate in a clean, organized, and hygienic environment, Mr. Asante said.
What's Next for the Beach Demolition Exercise
The demolition exercise has entered its eleventh day, and the TMA is expected to complete the exercise within the planned 15-day period. The assembly had previously declared the immediate surroundings of public institutions, security installations, and utility corridors as security zones and announced that unauthorized structures within such areas would be removed as part of efforts to improve public safety, protect critical infrastructure, and ensure orderly development.
