The Head of the Accident and Emergency Department at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Henry Bulley, has sounded the alarm on the hospital's dire situation. Overwhelmed with emergency cases, Korle Bu is struggling to keep pace with the growing demand for healthcare services.
Emergency Cases Overwhelm Korle Bu's Facilities
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Dr Bulley attributed the hospital's struggles to the widening gap between population growth and investment in health infrastructure. Ghana's population has grown from below six million to over 30 million, yet the hospital's capacity has not expanded to meet this demand.
Dr Bulley explained that Korle Bu has become the preferred referral centre for patients from across the country due to its specialist expertise and relatively affordable care. However, this has put a strain on the hospital's resources, with many patients requiring stabilisation at the Emergency Department before being transferred to specialist wards.
Healthcare Infrastructure Fails to Keep Pace
Dr Bulley identified the lack of investment in expanding hospital infrastructure, improving bed capacity, and recruiting more healthcare professionals as major challenges confronting the sector. He expressed concern that patients who have already been stabilised at other facilities are often transferred through Korle Bu's Emergency Department, worsening congestion.
As a result, critically ill patients are forced to remain in the Emergency Department for prolonged periods while waiting for beds in specialist units. Dr Bulley called for increased investment in expanding hospital infrastructure to meet the demands of Ghana's growing population.
Strengthening District and Regional Hospitals a Possible Solution
Dr Bulley also suggested that strengthening district and regional hospitals would ease the burden on Korle Bu by enabling more patients to access quality healthcare closer to where they live. He expressed concern that nurses are sitting at home, yet when you come to the hospital, the nurses on duty are overwhelmed.
Dr Bulley added that policymakers need to address the issue of financial clearance for healthcare professionals, which is a major barrier to recruiting more nurses and doctors. By investing in the healthcare infrastructure and strengthening district and regional hospitals, Ghana can ensure that its citizens receive quality healthcare services, closer to home.
