The Mion NPP Chairman Steps Down Amid Unspecified Reasons
Sulaiman Abubakar, the Mion Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Region, has resigned from his position, effective August 8, 2026.
Mr Abubakar announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the NPP Regional Chairman in Tamale.
Personal Decision
In the letter, he described his decision as a personal one but did not give further details about the reasons for stepping down.
“Please, kindly accept this letter as my formal resignation as the New Patriotic Party Mion Constituency Chairman effective today, 08 August, 2026,” he wrote. Mr Abubakar thanked the various groups and individuals within the constituency for the confidence they had placed in him during his time as chairman.
Appreciation to Party Members
He expressed particular appreciation to the Council of Elders, patrons, polling station and electoral area executives, as well as the wider membership and supporters of the party in the Mion Constituency. “I am incredibly grateful to the Council of Elders, Patrons, Polling station and electoral area executives and the entire membership and supporters of our party in the constituency for the confidence reposed in me to serve our great party for this short period,” he said.
Commitment to the Party
Despite leaving the constituency chairmanship, Mr Abubakar said that his resignation did not amount to a departure from the NPP. He said he remained a committed member of the party and would continue to contribute to its efforts to regain political power in the 2028 elections. “I remain an ardent and good-standing member of the party and will continue to discharge my role as a member to ensure we recapture power in 2028,” he stated.
Future Plans
Mr Abubakar also wished the constituency leadership well and indicated that he intended to maintain contact with the party. “I wish the constituency leadership continued success and look forward to staying in touch,” he said. As the party gears up for the 2028 elections, it remains to be seen what role Mr Abubakar will play in the NPP's efforts to regain power.
