Ghana spends just 0.084% of its overall expenditure on the creative industry, according to JoyNews Research. This paltry allocation has raised eyebrows at the ninth edition of Joy FM's Showbiz Roundtable, where industry figures gathered to discuss the government's impact on tourism, culture, and creative arts.

Government Spending on Creative Industry Meager

The government is spending GH¢255 million on the sector, which represents 0.084% of overall expenditure. This is despite the sector's potential to bring in significant foreign exchange, with projections of $5 billion annually. Industry figures, including Chief Operating Officer of Maestro Africa Group, Francis Doku, and Lead Consultant at Jesse Agyepong and Associates, Jesse Agyepong, attended the roundtable discussion to assess the government's commitments to the sector.

Creative Industry's Potential Goes Unharnessed

The creative industry is expected to be a significant contributor to Ghana's economy, with the potential to earn the country a spot in the top three foreign exchange earners. However, the meager allocation of funds to the sector has hindered its growth. Isaac Kofi Agyei, Head of Research at JoyNews, highlighted the need for increased investment in the creative industry to unlock its full potential.

Industry Figures Weigh in on Government's Commitments

Industry figures at the roundtable discussion emphasized the need for the government to increase its spending on the creative industry. They also called for better implementation of policies and measures to support the sector's growth. The discussion was moderated by broadcaster and arts and culture journalist Kwame Dadzie, and produced by Philip Nai, with support from Anita Teye and Idah Lamaire.

The meager allocation of funds to the creative industry has sparked concerns about the government's commitment to supporting the sector. Industry figures are now calling on the government to increase its spending on the creative industry to unlock its full potential and contribute to Ghana's economic growth. As the country looks to tap into the creative industry's potential, it remains to be seen whether the government will take the necessary steps to support this sector.
