Accra sits on the coast, so a day by the sea is never far. The beaches differ a lot, from the busy and lively to the quiet and plain, so it is worth knowing which is which. Ten within reach, with a note to check fees and conditions before you go.
Labadi Beach
The city’s most popular beach, at La, with drumming, horse rides and food at the weekend. It is lively rather than peaceful, and there is usually a gate fee.
Kokrobite
West of the city, known for a relaxed scene and live music, and a favourite for a slower weekend. It draws a mix of locals and visitors.
Bojo Beach
Quieter and cleaner than Labadi, reached by a short boat across a lagoon, which is part of the fun. There is an entry fee that covers the crossing.
Laboma Beach
Also at La, a spot for a straightforward day by the sea without much fuss.
Ada Foah
East of the city where the Volta meets the ocean, with calm estuary water on one side and the sea on the other. It is far enough that many make a weekend of it.
Prampram
A quiet fishing coast east of Tema, with far fewer people than the city beaches. Good for a cheap, low-key day.
Sakumono
Between Tema and Accra, with a beach and a large lagoon nearby. Handy if you want the sea without a long drive out.
Bortianor
Near Kokrobite, a working fishing beach where you see the boats come in. It is plain and real rather than set up for visitors.
Ningo
Further east, undeveloped and quiet, for people who want empty sand and no crowd.
Langma
West past Kokrobite, a quieter stretch that draws surfers to the area.
One thing to take seriously everywhere: the currents along this coast can be strong. Swim where other people are swimming, keep an eye on children, and do not go out far if you are not a confident swimmer.
