A 22-year-old fisherman, Godwin Tetteh, has been sentenced to three months in jail for stabbing a man during traditional rites at Teshie in Accra. The incident occurred on June 12, 2026, at around 7 pm.
Traditional Rites Turn Violent
The Accra Circuit Court convicted Godwin Tetteh of causing harm after he pleaded guilty to the charge. The court sentenced him accordingly, handing down a three-month prison term.
According to Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, who led the prosecution, the complainant, Christopher Tetteh, was a driver and a resident of Teshie, just like the convict. The prosecution said that on the day of the incident, Christopher Tetteh went to pray at a mosque and, while returning home, Godwin Tetteh saw him and asked him to stop.
The Argument Escalates
The prosecution said that Godwin Tetteh questioned Christopher Tetteh about why traditional rites had been performed for his daughter to become a priestess without his consent. The complainant reportedly responded that if the convict was a good father, he would have known about his daughter's traditional rites. This infuriated Godwin Tetteh, who allegedly punched the complainant twice in the mouth.
The prosecution said that Godwin Tetteh then pulled out a pair of scissors and stabbed the complainant in the left arm, back, and head, causing injuries. When the convict attempted to flee, the complainant smashed him in the mouth, and Godwin Tetteh took to his heels.
The Aftermath
The complainant subsequently went to the Police station to report the incident. While there, the convict was brought to the station in connection with another offence, where the complainant identified him. A Police medical form was issued to the complainant to seek treatment at the hospital.
The prosecution said that Godwin Tetteh admitted the offence in his caution statement. It is unclear what happened to the complainant's injuries or if he has since recovered.
