Rice farmers across Ghana routinely burn straw after harvests to clear fields for the next season. Robben Asare wants them to stop burning the residue, process it into livestock feed, and sell it for extra cash.
Asare, the Chief Executive Officer of Aspassion Farm and the 2025 National Best Youth Farmer, is in Rwanda trying to turn that idea into a commercial reality. He is one of several young Ghanaian business owners pitching for funds and commercial deals at the Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali.
"In Ghana, we farm rice a lot," Asare said. "But farmers burn the straw in preparation for the next season, thus posing a risk to the climate."
