When Katia Osei walked onto the TEDx Accra stage, the massive red letters behind her and the rug beneath her feet were made entirely of trash collected from Kantamanto Market.
Osei, the Head of Environmental Justice at The Or Foundation, was speaking to an audience in a city facing frequent flooding and heavily polluted waterways.
Rather than setting up standard event backdrops that go straight to a rubbish dump after a single afternoon, event organisers Jesse Gyau Kusi and Klenam Fiadzoe decided to rethink the physical structure of the venue.
They partnered with The Or Foundation, an Accra-based non-governmental organization working with workers in the Kantamanto ecosystem, to build the entire stage set from discarded textiles.
