Ghana’s head coach Carlos Queiroz said he would resign if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) decided his departure would help solve the country’s football problems. He made the comment after Ghana’s 4-2 loss to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
Ghana led 2-0 at one point but allowed The Gambia to score four goals without reply, handing the Black Stars their second defeat in Group C. The result has increased pressure on Queiroz, who was reappointed by the GFA earlier this month. The GFA said his international experience and knowledge of the team justified extending his mandate after he led Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Queiroz was asked about his future amid concerns over Ghana’s poor start to the qualifying campaign. He said, “If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation.”
The defeat leaves Ghana with zero points from two matches after an earlier 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké. Missing out on the 2025 AFCON, Ghana entered this campaign hoping to return to the continental tournament. Instead, the Black Stars face a difficult road ahead after giving up a two-goal lead at home.
Before the match, Queiroz had urged an attacking approach, saying Ghana needed to dominate possession and play with a positive mindset. He also called on supporters to back the team. But the collapse against The Gambia has raised questions about the team’s ability to hold leads and perform under pressure.
The responsibility for deciding Queiroz’s future now rests with the GFA. Meanwhile, Ghana must regroup quickly to keep their qualifying hopes alive in the remaining fixtures.
