For many young Ghanaians, a passport is the first step towards studying, working or travelling abroad. Getting one involves an online form, documents, an appointment and some patience.

Passports are issued by the Passport Office under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The details of the process and the fees change from time to time, so applicants should always check the latest official information before starting.

Start online

Applications usually begin on the official passport portal. Applicants fill in their personal details, choose a passport type, select an application centre and pay the fee. Standard and expedited services are usually available, at different prices.

Documents

Applicants are generally asked for proof of identity and citizenship. The Ghana Card has become central, and a birth certificate is often required, especially for first-time applicants. Children need documents relating to their parents.

Make sure names match across all documents. Differences in spelling or order of names are a common cause of delays.

The appointment

At the application centre, applicants submit documents and have their photographs and fingerprints taken. Arrive early and dress neatly; photos are taken on site.

Waiting

Processing times vary. Standard applications can take weeks, and expedited applications are faster. Applicants can track progress online or by contacting the centre.

Check before you pay

Before paying, confirm that you are on the official government website. Fake sites that copy the look of official portals have been used to steal money and personal data. Keep your payment receipt and application number.

Beware of middlemen

Agents often offer to “help” with passports for extra fees. Some are genuine, but others are fraudsters. The official process can be done by applicants themselves, and paying only through official channels protects against scams.

Renewals and lost passports

Renewals follow a similar process. A lost passport should be reported to the police, and the applicant will need the police report when applying for a replacement.

Children

Applications for children usually need the presence or consent of parents, along with the child’s birth certificate. Rules on this are strict, to protect children from trafficking.

Abroad

Ghanaians living abroad usually apply through Ghana’s embassies and high commissions, which run their own appointment systems.

Plan ahead

The most common mistake is waiting until a trip is booked to apply. A passport takes time, and a visa application needs a passport first. Starting months ahead saves money on expedited fees and a lot of stress.
