For visitors and Ghanaians returning home for weddings, funerals and holidays, getting around Accra can be a challenge. Many choose to rent a car. Done well, it saves time and stress; done carelessly, it can bring disputes and unexpected costs.

Self-drive or with a driver

Many rental companies offer cars with a driver, which is popular because Accra traffic can be intense and drivers know the roads. Self-drive rental is also available for those comfortable with local conditions.

Documents

For self-drive, companies usually ask for a valid driving licence, identification such as a passport or Ghana Card, and a deposit. Foreign licences may be accepted for a period, or an international driving permit may be required. Check in advance.

Choosing a company

Use registered companies with clear contracts and good reviews. Ask friends for recommendations. Be wary of informal arrangements with no paperwork.

Inspect the vehicle

Before you drive away, walk around the car and note any scratches or dents, ideally with photos. Check tyres, including the spare, lights, air conditioning and seat belts.

Insurance

Ask what insurance covers and what you would pay in case of an accident or theft. Understand the excess and whether it can be reduced.

Fuel and mileage

Clarify the fuel policy: full to full, or pay for what you use. Ask about mileage limits and extra charges for trips outside Accra.

Driver arrangements

If you hire a driver, agree on working hours, overtime, meals and accommodation for out-of-town trips. Clear agreements prevent misunderstandings.

Security

Park in secure places, keep valuables out of sight and lock doors in traffic. Avoid driving alone late at night on unfamiliar roads.

Police checkpoints

Keep rental documents, your licence and identification in the car. Be polite at checkpoints and ask for official receipts for any fines.

Peak seasons

Demand rises in December, around Easter and during major events. Book early to secure a vehicle and better rates.

Trips outside Accra

If you plan to travel to Kumasi, Cape Coast or the north, tell the rental company in advance. Some restrict certain routes, and long trips may require a more robust vehicle or a driver familiar with the roads.

Compare options

For short trips within the city, ride-hailing may be cheaper. For weddings, funerals and trips to the regions, a rented car with a trusted driver often makes the day far easier.
