A woman was critically injured after being shot at a funeral ground in Tonka, a suburb of Yeji in the Bono East Region, late Tuesday, September 29. The mourners had gathered to bury Matthias, who drowned in the nearby lake about three weeks before.
The victim was first taken to St. Mathias Hospital but was later referred for further treatment. Yohanes Dake, a family member, said they were deciding whether to send her to the 37 Military Hospital in Tamale or Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
The shooting has unsettled the community of Tonka and the wider Pru East District. Maxwell Dunu, the Assembly Member for the Konkonmba Electoral Area, told Adom News the suspect has not been caught. He said the community is helping the police with the investigation.
Details about the motive or the identity of the suspect remain unclear. Local authorities have not released further information on the case or the condition of the woman.
The incident took place during what should have been a solemn occasion. Matthias's funeral drew many from the area, still shaken by his drowning weeks earlier.
