Broadcast journalist Samuel Kojo Brace, known locally as Ahanta Pele, has announced his bid to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in Ahanta West ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections. He revealed his intention at a press conference, ending months of speculation about his political plans. Brace is set to formally submit his nomination once the NPP opens the process for parliamentary primaries.
His decision follows a series of community events, including the “Walk with Ahanta Pele” health and fitness initiative held in September at Agona Nkwanta. The event drew residents from the constituency, participants from other parts of Ghana, and members of the NPP Ahanta West Constituency executive.
Brace said his political ambition grew out of more than ten years of community engagement and service in Ahanta West. He added that people from different political backgrounds, including members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Convention People’s Party (CPP), and politically unaffiliated residents, encouraged him to enter politics. Their message, he said, was that his long-term dedication to the area’s development should come before party lines.
Before his career in journalism, Brace served two terms as president of the Ahanta Students Association while studying at the University of Cape Coast. He recalled poverty as a recurring issue among students then and said his leadership team created a fund to help those who could not pay school fees. This experience, he said, exposed him to the struggles many ordinary people face and strengthened his belief that reducing poverty should be central to his work in public office.
He expressed pride in belonging to the NPP and pointed to what he described as the party’s significant contributions to Ghana’s development. Brace cited free maternal healthcare and the Free Senior High School programme as policies whose impact remains unmatched. “I am proud to belong to the NPP and I would work with other NPP members and supporters across the country as part of efforts towards the party’s 2028 campaign,” he said.
Brace also voiced support for the party’s presidential candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. He referenced initiatives like the Gold-for-Oil programme and the domestic gold purchase programme as examples of the administration’s work.
If elected to Parliament, Brace has said he would prioritise entrepreneurship, job creation, and improved representation for Ahanta West. He intends to draw on his experience as a journalist and community advocate to connect with residents and push for their interests.
His entry puts him among several hopefuls vying for the NPP’s nomination in Ahanta West. The winner of the primary will represent the party in the 2028 general election.
