The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has yet to receive a formal arrest warrant notice for Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh confirmed. Despite reports circulating about a High Court warrant authorising the MP’s arrest, the Minority says the document has not been presented to them officially.
“We have also heard it, I mean in person and also in the news,” Annoh-Dompreh said. “Well, first of all, it hasn’t come to our attention formally. It is not something we are formally aware of.”
The situation comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the MP’s legal status. Annoh-Dompreh insisted the Minority had respected due process throughout. “We have been law-abiding. We have respected due process. If it is proven that we have to go through that motion, we will go through that motion because we have been a law-abiding group,” he added.
The Chief Whip also denied claims that Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah sought refuge in Parliament following an earlier attempt to arrest him. “The whole process, what happened at the court premises, I was there. I was a living witness. That was a clear illegality. So you don’t compare apples and oranges. They are two different things that happened,” Annoh-Dompreh said.
He distinguished the earlier incident at the court from the current unconfirmed warrant. The Minority will await official documentation before taking further steps. “If it is proven to be a formal process, and it’s a formal warrant that has been issued by a properly constituted court, let’s get to that bridge and we’ll know how to cross it,” he said.
The absence of formal notice leaves the Minority in a state of uncertainty regarding legal action against their colleague. The alleged warrant’s details remain undisclosed to the group. This gap between public reports and official communication raises questions about the next move for Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah and the Minority’s approach.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh’s presence during the earlier court proceedings, which he described as illegal, suggests internal tensions on how the law is being applied in this case. The distinction he makes between that event and the purported arrest warrant hints at a complicated legal and political situation still unfolding.
