Between 3,000 and 4,000 police officers have been deployed in Kumasi ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference and national elections scheduled for October 3. The force will manage traffic, secure delegate hostels, and maintain order around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where the event will take place.
Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, chairperson of the NPP Organisation Committee, confirmed the scale of the security operation during an interview with Citi News. He praised the cooperation of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Ashanti Regional Police Command, describing their efforts as “fantastic” and “cooperative.”
Preparations for the conference are reportedly well advanced. Delegates have begun arriving in Kumasi and are settling into designated accommodation. Public address systems are being installed at the stadium, and security personnel are positioned around the venue.
Karbo expressed confidence in the conduct of both aspirants and delegates, saying they had been cooperative throughout the process. He urged attendees to behave responsibly to ensure the event proceeds without incident. “We’re very much ready for tomorrow; you come around, you see the police and arrangements so far. I’m sure we’re ready,” he said.
The security presence is intended to cover multiple areas. Officers will handle traffic control around the hostels and stadium, provide protection for delegates and guests, and secure key points within and outside the stadium. The extensive deployment reflects the scale of the event, with thousands expected to attend.
The NPP’s National Delegates Conference will determine party leadership and candidates ahead of upcoming elections. The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has been selected as the venue for the gathering.
Karbo’s comments confirm the party’s reliance on state security forces to manage the event. The IGP and regional police command have been actively involved in planning and execution.
As delegates arrive and settle, visible police presence is already established in Kumasi. The collaboration between party officials and law enforcement aims to preempt disruptions and maintain order during the conference.
The scale of the police deployment is among the largest for a political event in the Ashanti Region this year. It reflects concerns over managing large crowds and ensuring safety in a politically charged atmosphere.
The NPP’s preparations continue amid an atmosphere of cautious optimism. Officials emphasize cooperation and responsibility among delegates as essential to the conference’s smooth running.
The extensive security arrangements will be tested on October 3 as thousands gather at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The outcome of the conference will shape the party’s direction heading into national elections.
