Local Government Minister to participate in UNDP-hosted Northern Peace Conference in Tamale

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has invited Ghana’s Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, to attend the Northern Peace Conference on October 26 and 27, 2026, in Tamale. The event will take place at the Global Dreams Hotel and is organised by the UNDP alongside the Parliamentary Northern Caucus, the National Peace Council, and the Northern Development Authority.

According to an invitation letter signed by Niloy Banerjee, UNDP Resident Representative, the conference aims to advance “peacebuilding, social cohesion, and inclusive dialogue across Northern Ghana.” It will gather policymakers, traditional authorities, civil society actors, development partners, youth and women representatives, and security institutions to examine the current peace and security situation, exchange lessons from ongoing initiatives, and explore practical ways to maintain peace and development in the region.

The UNDP pointed to the Ministry of Local Government’s involvement in promoting peace and social cohesion as a reason for Ayariga’s participation. The invitation said his “participation, perspectives and expertise will enrich the discussions and contribute significantly to shaping policy and programmatic actions” that support peacebuilding and sustainable development in Northern Ghana.

The conference’s timing comes amid ongoing efforts to address conflicts in the northern part of the country, where communal tensions and disputes over land and resources have periodically erupted. The event offers a platform for dialogue among stakeholders with influence in the region’s governance and security.

The UNDP has requested confirmation of Ayariga’s attendance by October 7, 2026. A representative from the organisation will follow up with the Minister’s office to answer any questions before the conference.

The Northern Peace Conference reflects a broader international and local push to engage diverse actors in conflict resolution and development strategies. How the Minister’s contributions will shape outcomes remains to be seen as the event approaches.
