Emmanuel Kofi Mensah, 22, a motor mechanic and Bolt driver, was sentenced to 25 years in hard labour by an Adenta Circuit Court for violently robbing a beautician. The attack took place on September 23, 2026, at about 10pm near Mantey Farms, Adenta.
Mensah had been hired by Yvonne Dzane Dzifa, the victim, to drive her from Madina Zongo Junction to Adenta. When they reached the Adenta Barrier, Dzifa asked to be let out. Instead, Mensah locked the doors and drove towards the Adenta-Dodowa road. Dzifa shouted for help but no one was nearby to hear her.
The court heard how Mensah stopped the vehicle at Mantey Farms and demanded Dzifa’s handbag. She refused. Mensah then pulled out a cutlass and threatened to harm her. He dragged her from the car and struck her repeatedly with the weapon to force her to surrender her belongings.
Dzifa resisted, clutching her bag tightly. Mensah slashed her left wrist and little finger before finally taking the handbag. It contained two iPhones—an iPhone 17 Pro Max valued at GH¢18,000 and an iPhone 12 worth GH¢3,500—GH¢3,200 in cash, and other personal effects.
After the robbery, Mensah called an accomplice who arrived on a motorbike. Dzifa managed to grab a backpack from the vehicle’s front seat and fled into the bushes. The two men chased her with the cutlass but failed to retrieve the backpack. She climbed a fence into a nearby house and stayed there overnight until the landlord alerted the police.
The police rescued Dzifa the next day. She had sustained deep wounds to her wrist and finger, along with bruises across her body. She received treatment at Pantang Government Hospital and was discharged.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, said Mensah admitted the offence in his caution statement. He also revealed the Bolt vehicle belonged to a Nigerian friend whom he had not identified. The accomplice remains at large.
On September 24, Mensah attempted to sell the iPhone 17 Pro Max at an Apple shop in Madina Zongo Junction. The shop owner noticed Dzifa’s picture displayed on the phone and suspected it was stolen. He detained Mensah and handed him to the police.
A search found the cutlass concealed in Mensah’s shorts. The court convicted him after he pleaded guilty. Mrs Angela Attachie, presiding, sentenced him to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
Authorities are continuing efforts to track down Mensah’s accomplices and bring them to justice.
