MTN Ghana has been urging customers in the Volta Region to move beyond basic money transfers and embrace the broader capabilities of its Mobile Money (MoMo) App. Over the past two weeks, company teams have visited communities, homes, and offices in Ho and surrounding areas to promote the app’s savings, investments, loans, and pension services.

Isaac Agyenim Boateng, Manager for Brands and Communication at MTN Ghana, told attendees at MomoFest that the company aims to reposition MoMo from just a transaction platform to a financial-wellness tool. “For us as a business now, we are moving from wallet to financial well-being,” he said. He pointed out that many customers still rely on the *170# short code for basic transactions but stressed the MoMo App offers more opportunities to manage and grow finances through mobile devices.

The campaign is not solely about increasing downloads of the MoMo App. Mr Boateng said the goal is to change how customers use digital financial services, helping them transition from simply sending and receiving money to building financial stability by saving and investing digitally.

Security remains a priority in the campaign. Mr Boateng warned customers to guard against fraud and keep their MoMo PINs and one-time passwords confidential. “Your PIN is your key. It is a key to your wallet,” he said. MTN supplements its security systems with ongoing customer education through SMS messages, social media campaigns, weekly fraud-prevention tips, and educational videos on its YouTube channels.

Vendors participating in the MomoFest also reported a shift in how they handle payments. Abandoned Grace Oma Mefut said digital payments have reduced the risks tied to carrying large amounts of cash after sales. Millicent, known as MG of MG Scoreset, described cashless transactions as an integral part of her online business, offering customers convenient payment options.

MTN Ghana believes expanding digital financial services will make financial products more accessible and encourage customers to manage their finances digitally, rather than treating mobile money as just a means to send and receive cash.

The MoMo App campaign in the Volta Region runs alongside broader efforts by MTN to deepen digital financial inclusion across Ghana. The company’s focus on financial services beyond money transfers reflects a wider trend in mobile money platforms seeking to integrate savings, credit, investment, and pension products into their offerings.

The Volta Region initiative reveals the ongoing challenges in shifting user habits from basic mobile money functions to more complex financial management. Despite the wider availability of services, many users remain tied to traditional transaction methods like the *170# code. The campaign attempts to address this by bringing education and app support directly to communities.

MTN’s push to expand MoMo’s functionality comes as digital payment services increasingly affect how businesses operate in Ghana. Vendors like MG Scoreset and Abandoned Grace report tangible changes in their day-to-day commerce, suggesting the campaign’s impact extends beyond individual users to the broader economy.

While MTN continues to promote the app’s financial wellness features, it also maintains a strong focus on security, recognizing that trust is essential for the adoption of new digital financial products. The company’s multi-channel approach to customer education aims to keep users informed about fraud risks and safe practices.

This strategy in Volta appears part of a larger effort by MTN Ghana to evolve MoMo into a multi-service financial platform, reflecting a shift in the mobile money landscape toward comprehensive digital financial management.
