Former Man City player Silva comes out of retirement

David Silva will make his playing return at 40 after agreeing to join Hong Kong Premier League club Sha Tin. The former Manchester City midfielder retired in 2023 following an anterior cruciate ligament tear during pre-season training at Real Sociedad but has now reversed that decision.

Silva won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain. His decade at Manchester City delivered 11 major trophies, including four Premier League titles. Three of those league wins came during periods when the club faced allegations of breaching financial rules, which City have appealed.

At City, Silva became one of the club’s most decorated players. A statue of him stands outside the Etihad Stadium, a rare honour for a footballer. Despite the injury that forced his retirement, he has chosen to continue his career in Hong Kong.

“I’m so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong,” Silva said in an Instagram video announcing his move.

Sha Tin currently sit eighth in the Hong Kong Premier League after four matches. Their next fixture is against Hong Kong Football Club on Sunday, 18 October. The club confirmed Silva’s arrival and said he will “settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut.”

Silva’s step into Asian football comes as a surprise for many. Players in their 40s rarely return to professional football, especially after serious injury. His move will draw attention to the Hong Kong Premier League, which has struggled to attract high-profile names in recent years.

Sha Tin have yet to announce Silva’s contract length or financial terms. The club’s statement focused on his integration with the squad and preparation for competitive matches.

Silva’s career path is unusual. After leaving City, he joined Real Sociedad, but the ACL injury during pre-season in 2023 ended that chapter prematurely. His return to the pitch in Hong Kong signals an unexpected continuation.

The Premier League titles Silva won include the 2011–12, 2013–14, 2017–18, and 2018–19 seasons. His presence at City contributed to the club’s rise in English football, though the financial breaches remain under dispute.

Sha Tin’s announcement confirmed Silva will soon arrive in Hong Kong, train with the team, and build fitness ahead of competitive play. The club has not specified when he will make his official debut.

Silva’s legacy in football includes international glory with Spain and club success with Manchester City. His move to Sha Tin adds a new chapter to a career that many believed had ended.

The next few weeks will reveal how Silva adapts to Hong Kong football and whether he can influence Sha Tin’s fortunes in the league.
