Everton’s Sherif fined for breaching betting rules

Everton forward Martin Sherif has been fined £5,000 by the Football Association for breaching betting rules 61 times over a 15-month period. The 20-year-old striker admitted to causing, permitting, or enabling bets placed on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026.

Sherif told officials he did not place any of the bets himself but acknowledged they were made using accounts registered in his name, which he funded. An independent regulatory commission noted that Sherif showed “genuine remorse” over the breaches.

Born in Liberia and a youth international for the Netherlands, Sherif joined Everton’s youth academy in 2019. He began training with the first team in early 2025. In February of this year, he moved to Port Vale on loan for the remainder of the season. During his time in League One, Sherif scored twice in 17 appearances as Vale were relegated.

The Football Association’s investigation covered bets made over more than a year, spanning late 2024 to early 2026. The fine reflects the seriousness with which the FA treats betting breaches, even when the player denies direct involvement in placing the bets.

Sherif’s situation adds to a series of recent disciplinary actions involving young players and betting violations in English football. The FA maintains strict rules prohibiting players from betting on football matches, aiming to protect the integrity of the sport.

Despite his loan spell and limited senior appearances, Sherif remains a player to watch at Everton. The club has not publicly commented on the FA’s decision. The striker’s admission and the commission’s recognition of his remorse are expected to influence any future disciplinary measures.

Port Vale’s relegation from League One this season was confirmed after a challenging campaign in which Sherif contributed two goals. His involvement in betting breaches during this period will complicate his prospects as he looks to re-establish himself at Everton.
