Emmanuel Nyankumi gave Western Region the lead just before halftime in the first semi-final of the 2026 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship, only for Thomas Asante of Prempeh Elite Academy to equalise two minutes from the end of regulation time. The match, played on Saturday, October 10, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, ended 1-1 after 80 minutes and was decided by penalties.
Western Region held their nerves in the shootout, winning 4-2 to secure a place in the final against Greater Accra, who defeated Brong Ahafo Region in the other semi-final. The penalty win halted Prempeh Elite Academy’s run in the tournament, sending them to contest third place instead.
The semi-final showcased Western Region’s composed and disciplined approach against one of the tournament’s most free-scoring teams. Nyankumi’s goal came just before halftime, putting them ahead after a tight first half. Prempeh Elite Academy pressed for an equaliser and found it late through Asante, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout.
The shootout unfolded with Western Region converting four of their attempts while Prempeh Elite Academy managed two. This result booked Western Region’s spot in the final set for Sunday, October 11, at the same venue.
The championship is part of the Ghana Football Association’s Talent Development Scheme, sponsored by the KGL Foundation, aimed at identifying and developing young football talent across the country. The tournament offers under-17 players a chance to test their skills and tactical awareness against some of Ghana’s best emerging players.
Western Region’s victory ended Prempeh Elite Academy’s impressive campaign, which had seen them advance to the semi-finals with a strong attacking record. Their exit leaves Greater Accra and Western Region to compete for the title.
Sunday’s final will determine the champion of the 2026 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship. The competition continues to provide a platform for future Ghanaian football stars to gain competitive experience and exposure.
