David Kwarteng scored in the seventh minute to give Ghana a 1-0 win over Togo in the opening match of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U17 Championship on Sunday in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The goal handed the Black Starlets the three points, but their coach Kassim Ocansey was left wanting more from his side’s finishing.
“We won, but I expected more from my boys,” Ocansey said after the match. “We created good chances, but we couldn’t convert. I am happy we have the three points, but we could have done better with the chances we created.”
Despite several scoring opportunities, Ghana managed only the one goal. Ocansey insisted that the team’s attacking potential remained strong, but sharper execution in front of goal must improve for the squad to capitalize on their chances.
“If we are able to convert the chances we create, we can get three or four goals in every game,” he added. “We’ll work on that ahead of our next game.”
The Black Starlets face Benin next on Tuesday as they look to maintain momentum and advance their campaign to qualify for the 2027 U17 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana’s start to the tournament was positive, but Ocansey’s focus will be on refining the team’s clinical edge in the final third before their next match.
