Drive west from Korle Bu along the road towards Dansoman and the houses close in on both sides. Shops spill onto the pavement, children walk home from school in uniform, and trotros stop every few metres. This is Mamprobi, one of the older residential areas on Accra’s western side, squeezed between the teaching hospital, the fishing community of Chorkor and the newer estates of Dansoman. Few visitors stop here, but tens of thousands of people call it home.
Where Mamprobi is and its Ga roots
Mamprobi lies south-west of central Accra, close to the coast. Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is on one side, Chorkor and the sea lie to the south, and Dansoman stretches away to the west. The area falls within the Ablekuma South constituency. Like much of coastal Accra, Mamprobi grew from Ga settlement. Many families have lived here for generations, and Ga is widely spoken on the streets. Over time, people from across Ghana have moved in, drawn by its closeness to the city centre.
Family houses and the polyclinic
Much of Mamprobi is made up of compound houses and family homes, many shared by several households. Space is tight, and extensions and upper floors have been added over the years as families grew.

Mamprobi Polyclinic is one of the area’s best-known institutions. It serves residents of Mamprobi and surrounding communities, handling outpatient care, maternal health and other services, and reducing some of the pressure on nearby Korle Bu.
Korle Bu, schools and getting around
Being next to Ghana’s biggest hospital shapes local life. Many residents work at Korle Bu, and students and staff rent rooms in the area. Pharmacies, food sellers and transport operators serve the steady flow of patients and visitors. The area has a number of public and private schools, and churches of many denominations hold services on Sundays. Mosques serve the Muslim community, and religious life is visible throughout the week.
Trotros link Mamprobi to Kaneshie, the city centre and Dansoman. Traffic can be heavy, especially on roads leading towards Korle Bu and the Mortuary Road area, and many residents walk or use taxis for short trips.
Challenges and community life
Flooding during heavy rains, crowded housing and pressure on drains and sanitation are concerns, as in many older parts of Accra. Residents and local assembly members have raised these issues repeatedly. Street football, Homowo celebrations and local markets give Mamprobi a strong sense of community. Neighbours know one another, and family ties stretch back many decades.
Most people pass through Mamprobi on the way to somewhere else, usually Korle Bu or Dansoman. Those who grew up there tend to describe it by the people they know rather than the roads they drive.
