Sammi Awuku urges NPP Germany to unite ahead of 2028 elections

Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Germany Branch to prioritise unity, humility and collective commitment as they prepare for the 2028 general elections. His call came during a two-day event held from October 9 to 10, 2026, in Hannover, which combined a Thanksgiving Service, Unity Dinner, and religious observances.

The event opened with an Islamic prayer session in Frankfurt on October 9 and concluded with a Christian worship service and Unity Dinner at Hütten Str. 228 in Hannover the following day. Attendees included NPP MP for New Juaben South Michael O. Baafi, Member of the NPP National Council of Elders Eileen Mary Posch-Oduro, Mayor of Mündenheim Rheinland-Pfalz Raymond Höptner, NPP Germany Branch Chairman Dr Nana B. Enninful, and Hannover Chapter Chairman Bright Otchere.

Awuku described his visit as that of a “John the Baptist,” intended to prepare the ground for an anticipated engagement between the NPP Germany Branch and former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on November 21. Dr Bawumia is scheduled to visit Germany at the invitation of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung to interact with party members.

Awuku stressed that the newly elected national executives and party structures at all levels must work together to strengthen the NPP and position it to regain power in 2028. He said the cooperation of all party members was essential for an effective campaign in the presidential election.

“The new national executives need the cooperation of all party members and structures to enable the NPP to effectively campaign for the 2028 presidential election,” Awuku said. He also emphasised the role of the party’s external branches in addressing Ghana’s current socio-economic challenges.

Addressing the leadership of the Germany Branch, particularly Chairman Dr Nana Benyin Enninful, Awuku urged humility, respect and selflessness. “A mandate is a privilege, not a licence to disregard others; trust must be earned through service,” he said. “A leader who wins the hearts of the people strengthens the office; one who loses their trust weakens it.”

Drawing from his experience as a young party organiser, Awuku recalled his success in youth and national organiser contests as evidence of the importance of mobilising and working with party members. He quoted a proverb: “It is the feathers that make the bird beautiful,” to emphasise the contribution of individual members to the party’s strength.

Awuku criticised the current government’s performance in education, health, sports and industry. He also questioned the implementation of the 24-hour economy policy and expressed concern over the failure to secure placements for more than 50,000 Junior High School graduates.

“The work of the NPP’s 87 opposition MPs is challenging, but we remain committed to what we consider Ghana’s best interests,” Awuku said. He urged Ghanaians both at home and abroad to remain politically engaged and encouraged diaspora members to discuss the NPP’s policies and vision with their families in Ghana ahead of the 2028 elections.

He urged the Germany Branch to put past challenges behind it and focus on rebuilding structures and strengthening mobilisation efforts. “Unity is not a slogan; it is the work members do together,” Awuku said. “When leaders serve with humility and members contribute with commitment, the whole Branch becomes stronger.”

Other speakers at the event also appealed to members to support the NPP and help strengthen the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
