Bawumia will become President, Ghanaian youth stand to benefit – Ekua Amoakoh

Dr Ekua Amoakoh, spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, said she believes he will become Ghana’s president. She warned it would be a loss for the country’s youth if they miss out on his leadership.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express with Emefa Adeti, Dr Amoakoh expressed confidence in Dr Bawumia’s political prospects when asked if he would ever assume the presidency. “I do believe so. And I do believe that it will be very unfortunate for the young people of this country if it misses him,” she said.

Dr Amoakoh criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its negative portrayal of Dr Bawumia, including accusations that he is dishonest. “You might have heard a lot. You know, the NDC can even go as far as calling him a liar. If we want to call people liars, then we’ll call all of you liars,” she said.

She pointed to former President John Mahama’s unfulfilled promise to build Hope City during his first administration as an example. “President Mahama promised to build Hope City in his first administration. He didn’t do it. Now he’s not even mentioning it again. Do I call him a liar for that? No,” Dr Amoakoh said.

The NPP Health Committee chair accused the NDC of focusing on personal attacks rather than engaging with Dr Bawumia’s policy proposals and record in office. She described the continuing political contest as one where the NDC seeks to exploit perceived weaknesses instead of debating issues.

Dr Amoakoh praised Dr Bawumia’s work ethic during his time as Vice President. “This is somebody that would have been vice president, and he would be, my own is go to church, go to this mosque, go for this wedding, go for this party, and he’ll be chilling in his office. He didn’t do that. It looked like he was itching to do stuff,” she said.

She suggested that if Dr Bawumia gains full executive authority, his approach to governance will change. “So you can imagine if he has full control of it. So I always believe that we will probably see something different if we allow Dr Bawumia,” she added.

Dr Amoakoh’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between the NPP and NDC as they seek to define their legacies and public images ahead of upcoming elections. The NPP has positioned Dr Bawumia as a candidate focused on economic reform and youth empowerment, while the NDC continues to challenge his record as Vice President.

The debate over political promises and their fulfilment remains a contentious issue. Dr Amoakoh’s invocation of the Hope City project reflects broader disputes about accountability and political rhetoric in Ghana’s electoral landscape.

Her remarks underscore the NPP’s strategy of defending Dr Bawumia against allegations while projecting confidence in his future leadership. The question of how Dr Bawumia’s potential presidency might differ from past administrations remains open as the campaign season intensifies.
