Henry Asante Twum explains why GFA opened applications for Black Stars job rather than a headhunt

The Ghana Football Association has opened applications for the Black Stars head coach position, aiming to restore public confidence and follow a recruitment process agreed with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. Henry Asante Twum, the GFA’s Communications Director, said the decision responded to public frustration with previous selection methods.

On TV3’s Sports Station show, Asante Twum explained that while headhunting and recommendations remained options, the mood among fans demanded a more transparent approach. “You are dealing with people who, in a way, are tired of a certain style or way of doing things and want you to change. All these are part of the process,” he said.

The GFA cannot act alone on this appointment. Asante Twum confirmed the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is involved, requiring agreement on the recruitment steps. “Since the decision was not solely that of the FA and had to involve the Ministry, we had to agree to move in certain directions. We needed to respect that particular approach,” he added.

Following the departure of Carlos Queiroz, the GFA and Ministry set up a five-member committee to oversee the search for a substantive coach. This committee opened the application process to public candidates instead of relying solely on direct approaches to preferred individuals.

The Black Stars have struggled in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. They suffered defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, prompting calls for a change in leadership. Ghana will face Somalia in a double-header in November, with interim coaches Kim Lars Björkegren, Ibrahim Tanko, and Godwin Attram leading the team.

The decision to open the coaching vacancy to applicants contrasts with previous practices. Queiroz’s exit left a gap that the GFA and Ministry now want to fill through a committee’s oversight rather than unilateral choice. This move comes amid pressure to regain respect for the national team’s management and results.

The next head coach will face immediate challenges, including turning around the team’s form in qualifiers and rebuilding trust among supporters. The GFA’s decision reflects an acknowledgment of public dissatisfaction with prior methods and a desire to involve broader stakeholders in the selection process.

The involvement of the Ministry adds a political dimension to the appointment, ensuring the process aligns with government expectations. Asante Twum’s comments indicate the GFA is balancing internal preferences with external demands.

The interim coaching trio has limited time to prepare for the November fixtures. Their stewardship will likely influence candidate evaluations and public opinion on the eventual appointment.

The GFA’s approach marks a departure from the usual practice of direct recruitment or quick appointments. By opening applications, the association has invited scrutiny and wider participation in choosing the next Black Stars head coach.

The committee overseeing the process has not disclosed a timeline for selecting the new coach. The public will watch closely as candidates emerge and the search unfolds.

This move to open the coaching role to applicants reflects a response to the mood of Ghanaian football fans and the influence of the Ministry of Sports. It is a rare moment when institutional decision-making responds directly to public sentiment in the country’s football governance.
