Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will have knee surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-2 Champions League win over Barcelona on Tuesday. The injury occurred in the 59th minute after a challenge with Xavi Espart, forcing the winger off the pitch unable to put weight on his right leg.
PSG have not announced a timetable for Kvaratskhelia’s return. The 25-year-old posted a message on Instagram acknowledging the blow. “Before every game I play, I ask God to leave the field healthy, but in vain,” he wrote. “I probably prepared for this game the best I have ever prepared for. I thought I was prepared for everything.”
Kvaratskhelia added: “I realise that God chose me and if I protected the players on another field, I’m ready to go through these months of hard work, pain, tears. I know I have to come back stronger for my people who always have my back. I won’t let you down, I promise, I won’t waste a second.”
The Georgian winger joined PSG from Napoli in January 2025. Since then, he has featured 11 times this season and contributed to the club’s back-to-back Champions League titles.
PSG also confirmed that Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos will miss matches for a few weeks due to injuries sustained during the same Barcelona fixture. Dembele left the game with a left thigh injury, while Marquinhos suffered a right thigh problem.
The match itself was tightly contested. PSG and Barcelona were level at 2-2 with ten minutes left before the hosts scored twice to secure their third straight win in this season’s Champions League. PSG lead their group with nine points from three games.
Kvaratskhelia’s injury is a significant setback for PSG’s attacking options as they defend their European crown. The club will now manage without one of their most influential players while awaiting updates on Dembele and Marquinhos.
