Obuasi SHTS: Third-year students to return October 25, second-years November 16

Third-year students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School will return to campus on Sunday, October 25, while second-years are scheduled to report on Monday, November 16, the Ghana Education Service announced this week. The staggered reopening follows a closure that began on August 5 after unrest on the campus led to property destruction and an attack on the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.

First-year students have been on campus since September 18 and remain there as the school moves toward normalcy. The disturbances erupted amid allegations of sexual misconduct involving Mr Abdulai. The Ghana Education Service interdicted the headmaster pending investigations, and a complaint was filed with the police.

Police have investigated a complaint involving a student related to the incident and forwarded the case docket to the Attorney-General for study and advice. The interdiction of the headmaster remains separate from the ongoing criminal investigation.

The unrest disrupted the academic calendar, raising concerns about the progress of students, particularly those in their final year preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination. The Ghana Education Service stated that preparations are underway to allow continuing students to resume academic activities, with further updates to be issued as needed.

The closure came after students reportedly destroyed school property and attacked Mr Abdulai. Media reports confirmed the headmaster was the target of the assault. The allegations against him triggered the complaints and the subsequent police inquiry.

The phased reopening aims to manage the return of students carefully while investigations continue. The Ghana Education Service has not provided details on measures to prevent further disturbances or how it plans to support students academically after the disruption.

The case involving the student and the Attorney-General’s office remains under review, with no public timeline for resolution. The community around Obuasi SHTS is watching closely as the school attempts to stabilize.
