The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed allegations of extortion levelled against its Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.

NPP Rejects Extortion Claims Against Afenyo-Markin

The opposition party's Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, said the allegations lack credibility and will not distract from its demand for accountability over the GoldBod controversy.

The NPP's stance comes after Mr Mohammed appeared on JoyFM's Top Story on Tuesday, August 25, where he was asked whether the party had internally investigated the extortion allegation against Mr Afenyo-Markin.

He said the party had discussed the matter but questioned the credibility of the person making the allegation.

Party Focuses on GoldBod Controversy

Mr Mohammed accused Sammy Gyamfi of previously making claims against individuals that, in his view, were untrue, arguing that this had affected the credibility of his latest allegation.

"Sammy Gyamfi is not a good messenger," Mr Mohammed said. "We all know in this country. He has peddled untruths."

Mr Mohammed also described Mr Afenyo-Markin as a respected lawyer, Member of Parliament, and senior member of the NPP.

NPP to Pursue Investigation

The party will continue with its broader efforts to investigate the GoldBod matter and demand accountability, Mr Mohammed said.

"We will continue to pursue investigation. We will continue to pursue accountability. We will pursue this to the end. And we will ensure that the right thing is being done," he stated.

The NPP's focus is on investigating what it describes as losses involving a state institution and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

What's Next for the NPP and GoldBod

The party's stance on the extortion allegations against Mr Afenyo-Markin marks a significant development in the ongoing GoldBod controversy.

As the NPP continues to pursue its investigation and demand accountability, the Ghana Gold Board and its stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds.

The outcome of the NPP's investigation and the consequences for those involved in the GoldBod controversy remain to be seen, but one thing is certain: the party's commitment to accountability and transparency will be at the forefront of its efforts.
