Many Ghanaian adults only discover they need a birth certificate when they apply for a passport or a Ghana Card. Then begins a search for documents, witnesses and old records. Registering a child’s birth early avoids that stress.
What a birth certificate is
A birth certificate is the official record of a person’s birth, showing their name, date and place of birth and parents’ details. It is issued by the Births and Deaths Registry.
Why it matters
The certificate proves a child’s age and identity. It is used for school admission, national examinations, passports, the Ghana Card, inheritance and many other purposes throughout life.
Where to register
Births can be registered at Births and Deaths Registry offices across the country. Many hospitals and health centres also help parents register births shortly after delivery.
What you need
Parents usually provide the child’s full name, date and place of birth, parents’ names and identification, and a document from the hospital or health facility where the child was born, if available. Requirements can change, so check with the registry.
Register early
Registering soon after birth is simpler and may cost less than late registration. Late registration can require extra documents or sworn statements.
Naming
In Ghana, naming ceremonies often take place a week after birth. Some families wait for the naming ceremony before registering, so they can record the chosen name. Check the spelling carefully; correcting a certificate later takes time.
Births at home
If a child was born at home, parents can still register the birth. They may need a statement from the person who assisted, a community leader or another witness.
Adults without certificates
Adults who were never registered can apply for late registration. They may need to provide evidence such as school records, baptismal certificates or sworn statements from older relatives.
Keep it safe
Store the certificate in a safe, dry place and make copies. Scanning it and saving a digital copy can help if the original is lost or damaged.
Corrections
If there is a mistake on the certificate, contact the registry to find out how to correct it. Do not alter the document yourself.
A child’s first document
A birth certificate is a small piece of paper that follows a person through school, work and travel. Getting it right in the first weeks of life is one of the most practical gifts parents can give.
