‘We have to say sorry’ – Queiroz apologises after Ghana’s humiliating defeat to Gambia

Ghana’s Black Stars lost 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The defeat came after Ghana led by two goals but gave up their advantage, allowing The Gambia to turn the game around and claim all three points.

This result leaves Ghana at the bottom of Group C with zero points from two matches, putting their chances of qualifying for next year’s tournament under serious threat. It is the second consecutive defeat for the Black Stars in the group stage.

Carlos Queiroz, the Black Stars head coach, expressed his deep disappointment after the match and apologised to Ghanaian fans. “Myself, the staff, all the players, we are deeply sad, deeply sad with the result that happened here today. And we have to say sorry to our fans, to our supporters,” he said.

Ghana started the game strongly, taking control early and building a two-goal lead. However, The Gambia responded with a remarkable comeback that stunned the home crowd and left the Black Stars searching for answers.

The loss on home soil adds pressure on Queiroz and his team as they look to recover in the remaining qualifiers. The Black Stars will now have to regroup quickly if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alive.

The match also raises questions about Ghana’s defensive resilience and ability to maintain leads under pressure. With the group still open, every point counts, and the Black Stars face a tough road ahead.
