Côte d'Ivoire Keeps Top Spot in West African Economy

Côte d'Ivoire has maintained its position as the largest economy in West Africa, with a real GDP growth averaging around 6-7 percent annually before the COVID-19 pandemic. The country's strong macroeconomic growth is attributed to its agriculture, industry, infrastructure investment, and services expansion.

A Key Economic Hub in Francophone West Africa

Côte d'Ivoire has long served as a key economic hub in francophone West Africa and is the largest economy of the region. According to the International Monetary Fund, growth is projected at around 6.4% in both 2025 and 2026. This growth is supported by the country's strategic location, which makes it a hub for trade and commerce in the region.

Security Consolidation and Economic Momentum

Security consolidation is also helping to feed Côte d'Ivoire's economic momentum. The country, which is a founding member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), remains one of the fastest-growing economies in sub-Saharan Africa. As the largest economy in francophone West Africa, Côte d'Ivoire attracts migrants from countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Guinea, making it a net supplier of remittances to the rest of the world. Net remittances to the rest of the world amounted to US$600 million in 2023, or 0.9% of GDP.

Dependence on Agriculture and Climate Sensitivity

Côte d'Ivoire is heavily dependent on agriculture and related activities, which engage roughly two-thirds of the population. The country is the world's largest producer and exporter of cocoa beans and a significant producer and exporter of coffee and palm oil. Consequently, the economy is highly sensitive to fluctuations in international prices for these products and to climatic conditions. Cocoa, oil, and coffee are the country's top export revenue earners, but the country has targeted diversifying its economy to reduce dependence on these commodities.

A Stable and Growing Economy

In a region marked by political instability and constant security threats, Côte d'Ivoire stands apart as one of West Africa's most stable and growing economies. The country's strong infrastructure, including its roads, ports, and airports, supports its economic growth and makes it an attractive destination for foreign investment. With its strategic location and economic stability, Côte d'Ivoire is poised to continue its growth and development in the coming years.

As Côte d'Ivoire continues to grow and develop, it will require greater resource mobilisation and continued reforms to maintain its momentum. The country's strong economy and stable political environment make it an attractive destination for foreign investment, and its strategic location in West Africa makes it a key player in regional trade and commerce. With its growing economy and stable political environment, Côte d'Ivoire is well-positioned to continue its growth and development in the coming years.
