Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the 2024 elections, told delegates at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on 3 October that he trusted them to decide the party’s leadership through the ongoing national executive elections.
Speaking during the conference, Dr Opoku Prempeh, known as Napo, said he had no personal interest in influencing the outcome. “The wisdom of the masses will prevail,” he said. He described the gathering of delegates from across Ghana as an important democratic exercise that would shape the party’s future.
The conference took place amid preparations for the 2024 general elections, with internal leadership elections seen as a crucial moment for the NPP. Dr Opoku Prempeh stressed that every vote cast would contribute to determining the leadership and strengthening the party as it looks ahead to future contests.
He acknowledged the competitive nature of Ghanaian elections, saying, “All Ghana’s elections have been tough and have been keenly contested, but at the end of the day, the wisdom of the masses will speak.” The running mate also voiced his confidence in the party’s prospects beyond 2024, particularly with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s political ambitions.
“The voters will decide who they think will give Ghana hope from 2029 onward, and they will elect that person. And I believe sincerely, it’s going to be Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP,” Dr Opoku Prempeh said.
Delegates and party supporters participated actively and peacefully in the internal electoral process, which Dr Opoku Prempeh described as encouraging. The conference’s leadership elections come at a time when the NPP is preparing to contest the presidency and parliament in the upcoming general elections.
Dr Opoku Prempeh’s remarks avoided any direct commentary on the candidates vying for party positions, instead emphasizing respect for the democratic process. His statement reflected an effort to maintain unity within the party during a period of internal competition.
The National Delegates Conference brought together thousands of NPP members from across the country. It remains a significant event in the party’s calendar, with national executive elections determining the leadership that will guide the NPP through the next electoral cycle.
The party’s internal elections are expected to influence strategic decisions ahead of the 2024 polls. Dr Opoku Prempeh’s public trust in the delegates’ decisions underscored the importance of member participation in shaping the NPP’s direction.
