The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie-Moore, has firmly denied claims that the Attorney-General’s Department has recommended his prosecution for allegedly stealing personal belongings belonging to a Singaporean businessman.
On October 23, Ashie-Moore issued a statement rejecting a report by JoyNews, which cited an advice from the Attorney-General’s Department suggesting that investigators charge him under Section 124 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). The report referenced witness statements, CCTV footage from Fiesta Residences, and a cybercrime analysis, which were part of the investigation docket.
“I categorically reject the report published by JoyNews alleging that the Attorney-General’s Department has recommended my prosecution. I maintain that the report is inaccurate, misleading and calculated to tarnish my hard-earned reputation as the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly ahead of the forthcoming internal party elections,” Ashie-Moore said.
The case concerns accusations that Ashie-Moore removed luggage and personal belongings of Singaporean businessman Toh You Kang while the businessman was in police custody. The broader dispute between the two men also involves allegations related to a purported US$800,000 payment for assistance in securing contracts with the Electricity Company of Ghana. Ashie-Moore has previously denied receiving the money and dismissed the allegations.
Though the report cited the Attorney-General’s Department’s advice recommending prosecution, this is not a conviction. Any criminal liability would have to be determined through the formal legal process.
Ashie-Moore called on JoyNews to exercise responsible journalism, urging the outlet “to thoroughly verify its claims, correct any inaccuracies and ensure that its platform is not used to unfairly damage reputations.”
The statement did not include a detailed rebuttal of the specific evidence referenced in the report, nor did it provide documents contradicting the advice from the Attorney-General’s Department.
The timing of the report, amid preparations for the NDC’s internal elections, adds a layer of tension within party ranks. Ashie-Moore’s denial signals the contested nature of the allegations as the party approaches a critical internal decision-making moment.
The Attorney-General’s Department’s recommendation remains an unconfirmed step in a legal process that could extend further. The dispute between Ashie-Moore and Toh You Kang continues to draw attention beyond political circles, touching on issues of business, law enforcement, and alleged financial misconduct.
