The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has called for party unity and cohesion to propel the party to greater heights. He made this call at a meeting with party executives from various constituencies, ward coordinators, assembly members, and metropolitan, municipal, and district executives (MMDCEs) in the Volta Region last Wednesday.
Party Unity Essential for NDC's Success
The meeting, which also addressed grievances ahead of the party's upcoming constituency elections, aimed to strengthen the party's grassroots structures in the region. Mr Gbande emphasized that internal wrangling and attempts to undermine one another can destroy relationships in pursuit of political power. He cautioned members against such behavior, warning that it poses a serious threat to the NDC and the government.
In his address, Mr Gbande reminded the party members that power and influence should not lead people to seek the downfall of others. He noted that comradeship within the party appeared to be weakening, with members increasingly driven by personal interests rather than the collective good. "Comradeship is dying in the NDC. Envy has become the order of the day," he said.
Principles of Fairness and Consideration
Mr Gbande also drew on principles from various religious and cultural backgrounds to emphasize the importance of fairness and consideration for others. He stated, "Yet we go to church. In the shrines, there are principles. In the Quran there are principles that you don't do to others what you don't want done to you." He urged party members to guide their conduct by these principles, regardless of their background.
The Deputy General Secretary warned that negative actions to undermine each other have consequences and can ruin people's lives, careers, or reputations. He cautioned that political power should not become a reason for party members to destroy one another over narrow interests. Mr Gbande said the consequences of internal hostility might not be immediately apparent, urging members to remember that political fortunes can change.
Town Hall Engagements to Boost Party Communication
The meeting also kick-started town hall engagements to be led by MMDCEs, with support from Members of Parliament and party structures. These engagements aim to allow the party and government representatives to communicate directly with constituents while responding to grassroots concerns. Mr Gbande said the growing tendency among some party members to undermine one another posed a serious threat to the NDC and the government.
In the face of these challenges, the NDC must work towards building a united front. By prioritizing party unity and cohesion, the party can better address the needs of its constituents and propel itself to greater heights. As Mr Gbande said, "We know the beginning; we don't know the finish. We know today, but we don't know tomorrow."
