Lieutenant General William Agyapong, Ghana’s Chief of the Defence Staff, has urged senior military officers to anticipate security threats before they emerge, rather than just reacting to them. Speaking at the Ghana Armed Forces Generals’ Convention, which opened on Monday, September 28, 2026, he stressed the need for strategic leadership that adapts to a changing security environment.
The convention runs through Wednesday, September 30, and brings together generals with decades of military experience. Its theme is “Adaptive Leadership in a Complex Security Environment: The Role of Shaping the Ghana Armed Forces.” Lt. Gen. Agyapong described the event as an opportunity for officers to engage in open dialogue about the future direction of the Armed Forces.
He said the strength of leadership should not come from uniformity of thought but from professional discussions that promote unity of purpose. “Military rank and experience must be accompanied by humility,” he told the gathering. The CDS encouraged the generals to challenge ideas constructively and to learn from one another’s experiences.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong also highlighted the need for joint operations on the modern battlefield. He called for integrated planning, coordinated execution, and a shared strategic vision across all branches of the Ghana Armed Forces. This reflects the increasingly complex and dynamic security challenges facing Ghana and the West African sub-region.
The seminar covers a range of issues, including intelligence handling, the military justice system, retirement procedures, ethical leadership, and contemporary military administration. The discussions aim not only to review existing procedures but also to reaffirm the professional values of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The CDS reminded officers to uphold duty, honour, integrity, discipline, and selfless service. He expressed hope that the Generals’ Convention would become a regular, biannual event on the Armed Forces’ professional training calendar. This would create a platform for ongoing strategic reflection and leadership development.
The call for proactive strategy comes as Ghana faces a more unpredictable security environment, with threats evolving in ways that require constant adaptation. Lt. Gen.
