GTA sensitises taxi drivers in ‘Know Ghana’ tourism campaign

Taxi drivers in Accra have started receiving training from the Ghana Tourism Authority to promote the country’s tourism attractions directly to visitors. The first session took place on Saturday, 3 October 2026, focusing on drivers from the Osu RE, Shoprite, and Papaye unions.

The exercise is part of the Authority’s ‘Know Ghana’ campaign, which aims to educate transport unions nationwide on its domestic marketing strategies. These include the ‘See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana and Feel Ghana’ initiative alongside ‘Experience Ghana’. The campaign intends to turn taxi drivers into frontline tourism ambassadors who engage tourists during their daily work, especially around the busy ‘December in GH’ season.

At the training, drivers were urged to share details about Ghana’s tourist sites, heritage, nightlife, and cultural experiences with passengers. They were encouraged to introduce visitors to local cuisine, traditional and contemporary clothing, music, and other cultural elements. The Authority also stressed the importance of playing Ghanaian music in their vehicles, linking it to the country’s cultural identity and tourism appeal during the December festivities.

The session was led by representatives of the Ghana Tourism Authority, including Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, who stood in for CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto. Francisca Boakye, Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Judith Kelly, Principal Corporate Affairs Officer, and Elvis Bruce Wallace, chairman of the Greater Accra chapter of the Tour Guides Association of Ghana (TORGAG), also took part.

The Authority believes that equipping taxi drivers with accurate and relevant tourism information will enable them to better assist tourists and help increase visits to local attractions. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to boost domestic tourism, stimulate the local economy, attract more visitors, and increase foreign exchange earnings.

Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi told the media the programme will extend to other transport unions, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Uber, and Yango drivers. He called on the media to publicise the training widely to reach more drivers and passengers across Ghana’s 16 regions.

As part of the campaign, drivers received branded T-shirts, car stickers, and flyers to support ongoing promotion of Ghana’s tourism offerings. This approach aims to ensure tourists have access to consistent information and a richer experience while travelling in Accra and beyond.

The Ghana Tourism Authority’s focus on taxi drivers recognises their daily interaction with tourists and foreigners, making them valuable channels for cultural exchange and tourism awareness. The training coincides with the build-up to ‘December in GH’, a period known for increased local and international visitor activity.

The initiative reflects the Ghana Tourism Authority’s strategy to integrate transport unions into its marketing agenda and harness their reach to boost the country’s tourism sector.
