We’ve moved gold purchases to Interbank rate – GoldBod CEO

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, made a significant announcement on Saturday, August 22, that the state gold trading institution has changed the exchange-rate mechanism used to price gold purchases. GoldBod is now buying gold at the interbank rate, minus a small adjustment, in a move that marks a major departure from the traditional exchange-rate mechanism used in Ghana's gold purchasing system.

GoldBod Abandons Forex Bureau Rate for Interbank Rate

According to Mr. Gyamfi, GoldBod did not introduce the use of the forex bureau rate for gold purchases. Instead, the institution has made a significant change to the pricing mechanism within a relatively short period. "It is not GoldBod that decided to buy gold at forex bureau rate," he said.

GoldBod is currently conducting gold trading on its own books and purchases gold using the interbank exchange rate, less a small adjustment of 10 pesewas. Mr. Gyamfi described the change as a significant development in the country's gold trading framework. The GoldBod CEO argued that the institution had achieved it within a relatively short period.

A 10-Pesewa Reduction for Now, Two Percent Next Year

The GoldBod CEO said the policy is not static and that GoldBod intends to introduce a larger discount. "Next year 2026, we are bringing a discount of two percent," he said. This move is expected to benefit gold sellers in Ghana, who have long complained about the high costs associated with selling their gold at the forex bureau rate.

Mr. Gyamfi stressed that GoldBod is currently conducting the trade on its own books. "We are running the trade on our books," he said. This change is expected to bring greater transparency and efficiency to the gold trading process in Ghana.

What This Means for Ghana's Gold Market

The change in the exchange-rate mechanism used by GoldBod is expected to have a significant impact on the gold market in Ghana. The move away from the forex bureau rate is expected to benefit gold sellers, who will now receive a higher price for their gold. However, the impact on the gold market as a whole remains to be seen.

The change is also expected to bring greater transparency and efficiency to the gold trading process in Ghana. With GoldBod conducting gold trading on its own books, the process is expected to be faster and more reliable. However, the success of this new system will depend on the ability of GoldBod to manage the trade effectively.

The change in the exchange-rate mechanism used by GoldBod is a significant development in the country's gold trading framework. It remains to be seen how this change will impact the gold market in Ghana and whether it will bring the benefits that GoldBod is expecting.
