An ICE agent shot a man in the Bronx during a targeted enforcement operation on Thursday that involved a five-year-old child inside the vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the shooting and said the man was alive and being treated at a local hospital.
The incident unfolded as ICE officers surrounded the vehicle containing the suspect and the child. New York mayor Zohran Mamdani called the event “unconscionable and incredibly serious,” stating that agents fired multiple rounds while the child remained physically unharmed. Mamdani said he would ask President Donald Trump to end ICE enforcement actions in the city.
The man shot has not been identified by officials but is reported to be from the Dominican Republic. DHS said he had a prior conviction for grand larceny and multiple arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession. The department also linked him to the Trinitarios, described by the US Justice Department as a transnational criminal group.
Late Thursday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had spoken to President Trump about the shooting. Hochul expressed “outrage on behalf of New Yorkers” and requested that any body camera footage of the shooting be released to the public to establish the facts. Trump has yet to comment publicly.
FBI officers were seen searching a vehicle at the scene on Thursday night. Meanwhile, a group of protesters gathered at the location, chanting “we want justice” and “ICE off our streets now.”
Mayor Mamdani wrote on X that he would not stand by “while ICE agents terrorise our communities,” demanding an end to enforcement actions in the city.
The DHS provided a statement confirming the ICE officer discharged his weapon during the operation to arrest a “criminal illegal alien.” The department did not specify the number of shots fired or the precise circumstances that led to the agent drawing his weapon.
The shooting has intensified ongoing debates around ICE operations in New York City, where local officials have often clashed with federal immigration authorities. The presence of a young child during the incident has raised concerns about the safety protocols ICE employs during such enforcement actions.
The man remains hospitalised, and investigations into the shooting continue. The release of body camera footage, if made public, could provide clarity on the events that led to the shooting.
