Kodua dismisses rift fears, says he and John Boadu are focused on NPP victory

New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has publicly dismissed concerns over a potential rift between himself and John Boadu, the party’s aspiring National Chairman. The two men’s relationship has come under scrutiny since Boadu lost the General Secretary position to Kodua at the 2022 national delegates conference.

Provisional results from the latest conference indicate that Boadu leads the race for National Chairman. This outcome has raised questions about how the pair will work together as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general election.

Speaking to Channel One TV, Kodua said the suggestion of discord was unfounded. “The positive aspect of it is that JB never stood anywhere and said that he can’t work with me. Likewise, I never stood anywhere and said I cannot work with JB,” he said.

Kodua described both himself and Boadu as mature politicians focused on the party’s broader goal. “We are all mature politicians. We understand that, yes, where we are now, it’s the NPP that needs to win,” he said.

The NPP’s immediate priority, according to Kodua, is to secure victory for its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2028 presidential election. “We all have a common agenda, which is to make Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the president of Ghana in 2029. And we are focused,” he added.

Kodua expressed confidence that Boadu and the party’s incoming leadership would collaborate effectively with his administration. “I can tell that JB and the JFK administration are going to give us victory in 2028,” he said.

The 2022 national delegates conference marked a significant moment in the party’s internal dynamics, with Kodua winning the General Secretary role over Boadu. The latest provisional results show Boadu has gained ground by emerging as the leading candidate for National Chairman, a position that will shape the party’s organisational strategy in the lead-up to the next election cycle.

Both men come from established positions within the NPP. Kodua’s tenure as General Secretary has involved managing party affairs and election preparations since 2022. Boadu’s previous role as General Secretary and his current bid for National Chairman position him as a key figure in the party’s leadership structure.

The NPP is facing intense competition ahead of the 2028 general election. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s vice-president and flagbearer, aims to succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo. The party’s ability to present a united front will be critical in maintaining its hold on power.

Kodua’s remarks suggest a strategic focus on unity despite past rivalries. “People are entitled to make their own assumptions and estimations. But for us, there’s no issue,” he said.

Observers will watch closely how Kodua and Boadu manage their working relationship in the coming months. The party’s internal cohesion could influence its campaign momentum and voter confidence as Ghana approaches the 2028 polls.
