‘There is no competition’ – Justin Kodua confident of NPP General Secretary re-election

Justin Frimpong Kodua, incumbent General Secretary of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), told delegates on October 4 in Kumasi that he faces little competition in the upcoming re-election. Speaking on the sidelines of the NPP National Delegates Conference at Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kodua said feedback from party delegates across the 16 regions suggested his victory was assured.

“There is no competition. There’s no competition because, as I went around the 16 regions, that was the feedback from the party delegates, and they spoke with emotion. They spoke their mind that they know the work I’ve done for the party, and certainly didn’t see this as a contest,” Kodua said.

Four candidates were listed for the General Secretary position: Kodua, Eugene Boakye Antwi, Sylvester Tetteh, and Dr Charles Dwamena. Despite the presence of other contenders, Kodua’s campaign appeared to have consolidated strong delegate support. Reports from his agents inside the conference indicated that his re-election could come by acclamation.

Kodua expressed gratitude to party members for their confidence in his leadership, linking his campaign to the NPP’s broader political aims. He predicted that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would lead the party into the 2028 general election and secure the presidency by 2029.

“…inshallah, by the time we get to 2029, Dr Mohammad Bawumia will become the president of this country,” Kodua said.

When asked about his plans if re-elected, Kodua pledged to prioritise teamwork and discipline with the other national executives. He said the newly elected leadership would focus on preparing the party for the 2028 polls.

“Well, they should expect teamwork based on discipline, and I’m looking forward to the other executive that they are going to elect. So that we all sit down and work hard,” he said.

“The only thing the party expects from us is to win the elections in 2028. That I can assure you, we work towards it.”

The NPP’s national officers elections form the final stage of the party’s nationwide reorganisation ahead of those polls. More than 7,000 delegates were expected to participate in the exercise, held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Kodua’s assertion of little competition contrasts with the presence of three other candidates but reflects the confidence conveyed by delegate feedback. The results will confirm whether that confidence translates into another term for him.
