Mikel Arteta has extended his contract with Arsenal until 2030, tying the Premier League champions to the manager who led them to their first league title in two decades. The 44-year-old Spaniard’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of this season, but an improved contract now guarantees his presence at the Emirates Stadium for potentially a decade since his arrival in December 2019.
The new agreement includes a rise in salary from £10 million per year to an undisclosed figure above that, with an additional £5 million in bonuses. Arteta benchmarked his worth against figures like Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid’s boss reportedly earning over £20 million annually, and former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. With Guardiola’s departure from City last season, Arteta became the longest-serving manager in the English top flight.
“This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue,” Arteta said. “We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.”
Under Arteta’s leadership, Arsenal clinched the Premier League title and the FA Cup. The team also reached the Champions League final in May, where they lost narrowly to Paris Saint-Germain. The near miss in Europe has fueled a desire to build on recent success rather than rest on laurels.
Arsenal’s chief executive, Richard Garlick, pointed to the advantage Arteta’s longevity brings in a league marked by frequent managerial changes. “Mikel is the only manager that’s won the Premier League that’s currently managing [in it],” Garlick said. “You look at all the other teams in the sort of traditional top six, and they’ve all gone through managerial changes. We’ve now got a manager who’s been with us for a significant period of time and has been allowed to build and develop a team over a period of time.”
Garlick stressed that the club views the recent achievements as a foundation rather than a destination. “We can’t stand still. We can’t sit there, pat ourselves on the back, and say job done. This is the beginning, not the end of our journey. This is where we want to go on and show the confidence that that win is going to bring to us.”
The Kroenke family, Arsenal’s co-chairmen Stan and Josh, expressed their satisfaction with Arteta’s renewal. “We share a special bond with Mikel. We are so proud of everything we have achieved since he returned to the club in 2019,” they said. “He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values and carries them in his heart. He knows what this club means to everyone connected to it and is committed to building on everything we have achieved together.”
The decision to secure Arteta’s future was expected, given the club’s desire to maintain continuity after a period of transformation. Arsenal’s resurgence, culminating in a Premier League title and a strong European campaign, has positioned the club as a serious contender on multiple fronts.
Arteta’s focus now turns to extending that success. The contract extension cements his role in shaping Arsenal’s next decade, with the club’s leadership keen to capitalize on the momentum generated in recent seasons.
With the new deal signed, Arsenal’s journey under Arteta continues, raising questions about how far the club can push in domestic and European competitions with their manager firmly in place.
