Nigeria will launch its National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System on October 1, 2026, marking a major step in modernising its address system. The rollout is planned for Nigeria’s Independence Day and follows Ghana’s lead, which introduced Africa’s first nationwide digital address system in 2017.
The system is Nigeria’s answer to Ghana’s National Digital Property Addressing System, branded GhanaPost GPS, which former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia helped implement. Ghana’s system gave every property a unique digital address linked to GPS coordinates, improving emergency services, national planning, and e-commerce deliveries.
For the first time in Ghana, ambulances, police, fire services, and delivery companies could locate any home or building using a 10-digit code. The system has operated across the country for nine years, proving reliable for logistics and public safety.
Nigeria’s Federal Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, announced on the social media platform X that the new postcode system would assign every home a unique, machine-readable digital address. The system will cover urban and rural areas alike.
“For the first time, every home will be assigned a unique postcode that’s simple, precise and built for a digital future,” Tijani said.
The Nigerian Postal Service’s Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi, said the current poor addressing system costs Nigeria between N50 billion and N80 billion annually due to misdeliveries. The new digital postcode system aims to cut those losses.
The system will place Nigeria among a select group of 10 to 15 countries worldwide with alphanumeric postcodes. It will also support President Bola Tinubu’s ambitious goal to build a $1 trillion digital economy.
Tijani described the system as a foundational layer of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure, saying it would anchor "every incident, every facility, every operation, and every response in Nigeria" on a single trusted location layer. He added that this would make coordination "instantaneous," accountability "traceable," and response "precise."
The announcement comes just days after another digital advance from Ghana went global. On September 29, 2026, the United States launched America.Gov, an AI-powered consolidated portal for all federal government information and services. Ghana’s own integrated digital platform, Ghana.Gov, was launched in 2021 under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership.
Ghana’s early investment in digital public infrastructure is now influencing neighbouring Nigeria and even the US. The country’s systems for digital addressing and government service integration are being replicated internationally, highlighting Ghana’s lead in this area.
Nigeria’s shift to a national digital address system signals a new phase for public services and delivery logistics in Africa’s most populous country.
