Okyeame Kwame said he envies women for the ability to give birth and would like to be a woman in his next life just to experience childbirth. The Ghanaian musician made the comment during an interview on Joy Prime’s show Changes with host Nikki Samonas.
The artist, known as the Rap Doctor, told Samonas, “In my next life, I would love to experience childbirth. So I would love to come as a woman. I think I’m jealous of women and one of the key things that women have that we don’t is the fact that you’re able to hold a soul in yourself and once in your life, it could be two souls in one or more. But you have the strength.”
Okyeame Kwame said men could not handle the pain women endure during childbirth. “I tell you if men were the ones giving birth, we’ll just give birth once and stop because I don’t think we can deal with the pain as women,” he said.
Though he admires this female experience, Okyeame Kwame said he would want to live as a woman in a more enlightened society. He explained he would want to avoid the challenges women face today.
“So yes, I would love to experience how it is to be a woman but in a more enlightened society so I don’t face what women are facing right now,” he said.
Okyeame Kwame also spoke about how newborn male children are often welcomed more warmly than females in some Ghanaian families. He said this is an issue he wants to address through his platform.
He encouraged men to unlearn rigid social beliefs and to embrace their feminine side to understand women better. “I’m currently doing this myself,” he said.
The Rap Doctor’s comments came at a time when conversations about gender roles and equality are ongoing in Ghana. His call for empathy towards women adds to voices pushing for change.
Okyeame Kwame’s remarks provide a rare look into how a prominent male artist perceives womanhood and the physical and social challenges women face in Ghanaian society.
