Connect FM’s Portia Cudjoe selected for UK Media Excellence for Emerging Technology Fellowship

Portia Cudjoe, a journalist with Media General’s Connect FM in Takoradi, is among a select group chosen for the UK Media Excellence for Emerging Technology (UK MEET) Fellowship. The programme, run by Imperial College London through Imperial Global Ghana and supported by the British High Commission, attracted over 500 applicants from Ghana and Nigeria. Cudjoe secured her place through a competitive process that weighed her reporting experience, perspectives, and investigative story proposals.

The fellowship aims to sharpen journalism on science, technology, and emerging innovations. It kicked off with a Zero Week online workshop, designed to introduce fellows to the programme’s objectives and to provide a platform for interaction with facilitators and peers. This phase helps participants prepare for deeper engagement with emerging technology topics and journalistic techniques.

UK MEET will equip journalists with skills to scrutinise scientific claims, verify information, analyse data, and translate complex technological developments into accessible stories. Participants will attend residential training in Accra, where they will interact with researchers working in fields such as artificial intelligence, climate change, and health technology. Editorial clinics will follow, refining story ideas, strengthening sources, and developing publication strategies.

The programme encourages collaboration and knowledge exchange among science and technology journalists in the region. It seeks to create networks that allow professionals to engage across borders on issues shaping public life.

Cudjoe’s involvement reflects her interest in how emerging technologies affect Ghana’s Western Region, particularly in areas like agriculture, livelihoods, healthcare, and community development. She expects the fellowship to deepen her understanding and improve her ability to produce evidence-based reports that serve the public interest.

Her participation comes as technological developments increasingly influence everyday life and public policy. The fellowship offers a platform for journalists to critically examine innovations and ensure accurate reporting. For Cudjoe, the goal is to contribute to a media environment where public discussion is informed and innovation is held accountable.
