SpaceX, the private rocket company founded by Elon Musk, is expanding its operations with a massive new launch site in Louisiana. The $100 billion project, named Starbase, Louisiana, will be the company's largest launch site yet, covering an area of 125,000 acres.
A Global Hub for Next-Generation Aerospace
Construction of the Starbase, Louisiana, facility is set to begin next year, with the aim of launching the first Starship flight from the site in 2029. This will mark a significant expansion of SpaceX's operations beyond its current Texas headquarters and Florida locations.
The Louisiana Economic Development agency has estimated that the facility will add more than 3,000 jobs to the region, with an average wage of 192% more than the current average salary. This will also create over 8,100 new jobs indirectly, according to the agency.
Starship Flights to Earth, the Moon, and Beyond
SpaceX said that the new facility will be used to support thousands of Starship flights a year, with missions launching to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. This ambitious project will require a significant increase in launch frequency and access to space.
The company's shares have tumbled by over 30% from the highs reached shortly after it began trading on New York's Nasdaq, but are still higher than their $135 offer price. Despite this, SpaceX remains under pressure to convince investors that it will be profitable even as it pursues its expansion plans.
A New City in Texas
Interestingly, the name "Starbase" is not unique to the Louisiana facility. In 2025, residents in an area of Cameron County, Texas, where the company has testing and development operations, approved incorporating the patch of land as a city called Starbase. This new city will share its name with the Louisiana facility.
Ambitious Goals for SpaceX
Elon Musk's plans for SpaceX are ambitious, to say the least. The company aims to reach Mars, develop artificial intelligence (AI) models, and launch data centers into space. SpaceX has also announced plans to build a $16.8 billion artificial intelligence (AI) chip making complex in Texas called the Terafab.
