Kumasi records third commercial fire in three days

The third major fire in three days tore through Tafo Moro Market in Kumasi, destroying stalls and merchandise at the popular second-hand shoe trading centre. The blaze struck in the Old Tafo Municipality, leaving traders scrambling to assess their losses and clear charred debris.

The fire comes days after two other commercial fires hit Kumasi. On Friday, a mattress manufacturing company was engulfed in flames, reducing several products to ash. Later that same day, a fire broke out in a section of Kumasi Central Market.

Traders at Tafo Moro Market were forced to halt trading as the smoke cleared. The market, known for its concentration of second-hand shoe vendors, saw numerous stalls gutted by the flames. The exact cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, and no casualty reports have been made public.

This incident has intensified concerns about fire prevention and response capabilities in Kumasi’s commercial areas. Local authorities have yet to announce measures to address the recurrent outbreaks.

The frequency of these fires within a short period raises questions about infrastructure and safety standards in the city’s markets. For the affected traders, the losses represent a significant financial blow, with merchandise and stalls destroyed.

Kumasi’s firefighting resources have faced criticism following the recent spate of fires, with calls growing louder for better equipment and rapid response teams. However, official statements on investigations or plans to prevent future incidents are still pending.

The fire at Tafo Moro Market adds to a string of incidents that have disrupted commerce and shaken confidence in the city’s ability to protect its trading hubs. Traders are left to rebuild amid uncertainty about when normal activity will resume.
