Mr President, Ghana was mentioned at the UN; why aren’t we talking about it?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named Ghana among 47 countries whose citizens he said are being exploited by Russia in its war against Ukraine during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Zelenskyy listed Ghana alongside Nepal, Tajikistan, India, Yemen, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Belarus, and Sudan. He warned that people from these countries were arriving in Russia through “deception and tricks” and dying on battlefields far from home.

The allegation caught widespread attention on social media, yet the immediate response from Ghana’s government has been muted. Questions now press on President John Dramani Mahama’s administration about the scale and nature of Ghanaian involvement. How many are there? Were they recruited knowingly or misled? Are any Ghanaian citizens currently prisoners of war or casualties? And what steps is Ghana taking to protect its nationals?

The issue demands verification. It is unclear if the government has confirmed or denied Zelenskyy’s claim, but the president’s statement warrants an official investigation. Ghana faces a diplomatic and humanitarian challenge in clarifying these claims and addressing the fate of its citizens alleged to be involved in the conflict.

This is not the first time Ghana’s presence has been noted at the UN in the context of international crises, but the gravity of this accusation elevates the stakes. The recruitment of foreign nationals into a war zone raises concerns about illegal recruitment networks, possible deception, and the safety of vulnerable citizens. Zelenskyy’s appeal to the affected countries was a direct call to action to protect their people.

Social media discussion around Ghana’s representation at the UN has largely focused on political rivalries, the appearance of President Mahama, and commentary on Ghana’s domestic politics. However, the mention of Ghana’s name in connection with the Russia-Ukraine war should push this issue to the forefront of national discourse.

If confirmed, the recruitment of Ghanaians into Russia’s war effort requires urgent government intervention. This includes identifying how citizens are being drawn into the conflict, issuing warnings against fraudulent recruitment, and providing support to families affected by injury, capture, or death. If the allegation is false, Ghana must publicly refute it to prevent misinformation from damaging its international reputation and causing domestic unrest.

President Mahama’s government has a dual responsibility: to represent Ghana’s interests on the world stage and to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad. The silence or lack of clear communication on this matter risks leaving Ghanaian lives unprotected in a conflict thousands of kilometres away.

The international community is watching. Ghana’s name has been spoken at the UN in a context that implicates its citizens in one of the most consequential conflicts of the 21st century. The government’s next steps will be closely observed, not just by Ghanaians but by global actors concerned with the legality and human cost of the war.

For now, the questions remain open. How many Ghanaians are involved? Under what circumstances? What is the government’s response? The answers will shape Ghana’s foreign policy and its duty of care to its people.
